trying sort out the differences between coach and comfort class tickets on the actual trains?

1st class is more comfortable, more leg space, usually more quiet. However, most people here travel in 2nd class which is perfectly fine for commuting between cities.

No,

in 2nd class, the seats are four-four;
in 1st class, the seats are four-two;

Baggage storage is available at one end of each compartment, but also under, above, and between the seats, and on platforms.

We suggest to travel light-weight, as the bagagge space is limited and it will also facilitate transfers between trains.

Daily, thousands of tourists use the Swiss trains for travel. You will be fine as well, certainly.
