Point-to-point class upgrade with 2nd class eurail/interrail pass

Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to buy a point-to-point class upgrade to first class on the SBB app with a 2nd class Eurail Pass or Interrail Pass. Me and my friends already have these passes and would like to ask if it’s possible to upgrade the rail by buying the class upgrade.

Yes, this is possible.

Holding a 2nd class Eurail Pass or Interrail Pass, you are welcome to get a class upgrade at full fare.
Given the availability, a full fare Supersaver class upgrade would work as well.

As a general saying, besides Supersaver tickets, any train ticket is valid for a route, and not for a specific train. Thus, you can use the EP even for the Belle Epoque train. But, I highly recommend getting a seat reservation in addition. You can get it from the train operator’s website:

First: Thank you for pointing me to the URL where you can buy point to point class upgrades on line.

This answer seems at least partially incorrect. You can at least sometimes buy a point to point upgrade in Switzerland at https://www.sbb.ch/en/tickets-offers/tickets/point-to-point-tickets-switzerland/class-upgrades-supersaver-class-upgrades/class-upgrade.html

For example I have a Eurail 2nd class pass and wanted to upgrade to 1st class for a trip on the Glacier Express. I contacted Rhaetian Railway’s customer support asking them the price of a specific trip upgrade. They responded in part:
"You have the following options to buy the upgrade:

Online via SBB
You can buy your upgrade under the following link: Outward and return tickets | SBB

Train station
You can also purchase the upgrade before or on the day of travel at any staffed railway station or at any ticket machine in Switzerland."

That wasn’t very helpful, because just going to the SBB site and selecting my train trip didn’t come up with the option to buy a 2nd class to 1st class upgrade. However, starting at the link above, I was able to find and select my specific train trip and then buy a point to point upgrade. The price matched the price Rhaetian Railway had quoted. So I’m pretty confident it will work.

BTW: The actual upgrade ticket I received from SBB is not train specific. It is simply marked with the departure and arrival stations and time stamped 00:00 on the date I’m traveling to 05:00 on the date after I’m traveling.

How does it work if I have the Halbtax Plus? I have the interrail 2.class and want to buy an upgrade point-to-point. Can I use the Halbtax fare or do I need to buy full fare?

FYI: I’ve now booked everything I wanted. I’m just trying to help others who find this conversation as I did when trying to purchase an upgrade to 1st class.

I accidentally left a critical sentence out of my post: The cost of my upgrade ticket was roughly 42% of the full fare price of a 1st class ticket.

I thought your answer was partially incorrect because I interpreted your statement, “Holding a 2nd class Eurail Pass or Interrail Pass, you are welcome to get a class upgrade at full fare.” as meaning one would be charged the full fare of a 1st class ticket for the upgrade. I’m now thinking what you meant was no discount would apply to the cost of the upgrade with a Eurail Pass or Interrail Pass.

My travel date is 27.05.2025 Andermatt to Chur. When I choose a specific train and click on the Select tickets button and then select 1st class, the only options are: Point-to-point ticket & Saver Day Pass. No upgrade option.

As mentioned in the German speaking community, simply purchase an upgrade at half fare when having Halbtax Plus and the half fare card. If you do not have the half fare card, then you must purchase a full fare class upgrade yet you can still use Halbtax Plus for payment.
